Including this recording, Backhaus recorded Brahms’s Second Concerto three times in his lifetime; even when compared to the 1953 recording with Schuricht or the 1967 Vienna Philharmonic recording with Böhm, this one is in no way inferior in terms of tone and power. It is also surprising just how good the sound quality is for a reissue of a pre-war SP recording.
