Screws, bolts, rubber, felt, and plastic objects are placed on the piano strings to obtain percussion sounds reminiscent of gamelan musical instruments, creating an interesting meditative world of India. Unlike Cage's later works, the instructions for which screws to place on which piano strings are quite detailed and exacting, and it is said that it took the pianist approximately three hours to prepare the prepared piano for this work.
