The two pieces, the early Bartók and the Russian Catoire, are of such a high standard that they are not only a pleasure to listen to, but also extremely valuable, since neither of them has been recorded to any great extent.\n\n\n\nGeorgy Catoire (1861-1926) was a composer of the generation between Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Scriabin, and was Kabalevsky's teacher. Like his contemporaries Arensky, Taneyev, and Lyapunov, he was a master of the piano and left behind a number of highly technical and substantial piano pieces.The Piano Quintet, written in 1914, is in the Tchaikovsky tradition, but with a hint of Scriabin and other avant-garde influences, making it very fresh.\n\n\n\nBartók's Piano Quintet was written in 1904, when he was 22 years old, and although it is now in the 20th century, it is still 19th century in style and is a large work with a playing time of over 40 minutes. Bartók is best known for his six string quartets, and the Piano Quintet, while melodious and mild in style, is intriguing in that it contains hints of these string quartets. The sense of life full of impetus is a charm that only Bartók can provide.\n\n\n\nThe Elysée Quartet, composed mainly of Russian musicians, is a marvelous ensemble that never loses a stitch. Both works are performed by a master piano player, so the piano's presence and spectacular technique are overwhelming, and Etsuko Hirose's exquisite playing shines through.
