Kuiken takes notice of!
Les Ombres perform F. Couperin’s “Les Nations”
This is a must-listen album—it’s especially interesting to compare it with J.S. Bach’s arias

★Les Ombres, an up-and-coming early music ensemble formed in 2006, has released a highly anticipated second album on the AMBRONAY label. LesOmbres garnered attention with their first album (AMY301) for its extremely rare program featuring works by Commons de Brahmont, but this time they have taken on F. Couperin’s masterpiece, “Les Nations”! What’s particularly noteworthy about this album is that it includes an organ piece by J.S. Bach at the end of the suite! This is because the Aria in A major, BWV 587, is an arrangement by Bach of the first movement from the “People of the Holy Roman Empire” section of “Les Nations” (though there is a theory that it was not actually composed by Bach). The program is structured so that, after the final piece of “The People of Piedmont” has finished, there is a distinct pause before Arall’s organ performance begins. The result is an interesting album with a touch of wit, highlighting the intersection between France and Germany and the two composers!

★ As the title “People of the Nations” suggests, this work represents the peoples of four nations: France, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and Piedmont (now part of Italy, but formerly ruled by the French noble House of Savoy). While the style is strongly reminiscent of Corelli’s concerto grosso, the gentle rhythmic sense of the dance pieces and the elegant melodies brimming with refinement embody the unique charm of F. Couperin—and, by extension, French Baroque music. The unequal ornamentation, scattered playfully throughout the leisurely rhythm, is beautiful, and together with the warm harmonies unique to period instruments, this is a masterpiece that draws the listener in with its gentle charm. The ensemble performing this work, Les Ombres, was founded by viola da gamba player Margot Bronchard and flute player Sylvain Sartre. As a promising young ensemble poised to lead the next generation of the Baroque world, they are highly regarded by figures such as B. Quicken and J. Christensen, and are a group of talented young musicians garnering high praise, particularly in France. They are already touring globally, including Japan, and are an ensemble whose future success is sure to be closely watched!
King International

Tracklisting:

1.Les Nations: Premier ordre: La Francoise.
