For his debut album, Genușas is said to have requested two of Prokofiev’s early works and Piano Sonata No. 5—the only one of the nine sonatas composed outside of Russia. Although his father is Lithuanian, Genușas’s mother is Russian, and he was born in Moscow. His maternal grandmother was Vera Gornostaeva, who taught many students in Japan, including Holodenko and Ayako Uehara. He learned the Neigaus school of pianism from his grandmother. While Prokofiev’s piano works are typically characterized by fiercely struck dissonances and a sports-like sense of speed, the pieces selected here are, for the most part, lyrical and melodic, and Genyushas’s delicate interpretation is absolutely exquisite. You can fully savor Prokofiev’s fairy-tale-like world. Piano Sonata No. 5 was composed in Paris in 1923 and shared the avant-garde style of his contemporaneous Symphony No. 2 and the opera *The Fiery Angel*; however, in 1954, shortly before his death, he made extensive revisions and changed the opus number to 135. Coincidentally, it became the last work Prokofiev ever completed. Since the version performed here is this revised edition, it is actually one of his very last works, and its transparent, unhesitating music is deeply moving. The 10 miniatures were composed between 1906 and 1913, during Prokofiev’s teenage years, and each is highly distinctive.
