Having made a spectacular recital debut at Suntory Hall in 2007 and received high praise during his return performance in Japan in 2009, he is an artist whose popularity is rapidly rising in Japan as well. Noubregue has previously released ambitious programs on the MIRARE label, including his Suntory Hall live performance (MIR.060), Beethoven’s *Hammerklavier* (MIR080), and Érol’s Piano Concerto (MIR127) performed with Nika. This live recording, taken at La Cité de la Musique—a concert hall located next to the Paris Conservatory—is part of the “Rising Star” series organized from 2010 to 2011. In addition to works by Liszt and Debussy, the program drew significant attention for featuring a piano sonata by the French contemporary composer Jean Baraké (1928–1973). Although Baracque’s work is representative of his early period, this piano sonata is rarely performed due to its length (the first movement is approximately 20 minutes, and the second movement approximately 18 minutes) and its extremely high level of difficulty. The sequence of sounds—inorganic yet at times fiercely unfolding—is reminiscent of the style of the young Boulez, who was active during the same period. In addition, this concert features works by Nouberge himself, who is also active as a composer! Much like Barake’s piano sonata, the listener is deeply drawn into the tense, silent spaces that emerge between the intermittent sounds. Noubourg’s performances of the works by Liszt and Debussy—interwoven with the contemporary pieces—exhibit a soft yet steadfast stability that is so compelling, you’ll almost forget this is a program featuring some of the most challenging pieces in the repertoire.
