The nuanced tones performed by Azzolini From the chalumeau to the horn—the charm of an orchestra with a diverse range of sounds! The 76th release in the Vivaldi Edition is a collection of bassoon concertos featuring the master bassoonist Azzolini! A total of 39 of Vivaldi’s bassoon concertos (including fragments) have survived; they were composed from around 1725 through the end of his life. With this sixth installment, early music bassoon virtuoso Azzolini has finally completed a recording of the entire collection. In Vivaldi’s time, the bassoon was primarily an instrument used for the basso continuo; however, there were also extraordinary virtuosos such as the musicians in Count Morzin’s orchestra in Prague, the phenomenal Anton Mezer of the Dresden Court Orchestra, and even Giuseppe (Gioseppino) Biancardi of Venice—known as the dedicatee of RV502—were among the great virtuosos of the time. It goes without saying that every piece was written with the first-rate ensembles of the era in mind. Here, Azzolini leads his own ensemble, Ronda Armonica, employing a rich instrumentation that includes the oboe, flute, chalumeau, clarinet, and even the horn. In keeping with the magnificent tradition of the Dresden Court Orchestra, he creates a diverse range of sounds and atmospheres. This recording includes RV501, La Notte; RV478; RV487; and RV466, as well as two works—RV468 and RV482—that have survived only in fragments. Of RV468 in C major, only the first two movements (Allegro molto and Andante) survive, while of RV482 in D minor, only the opening Allegro molto remains. Azolini therefore arranged and performed movements from the Cello Concertos RV399 and RV406, which are in the same keys. The affinity between the bassoon and the cello—both of which handle the lower register—and their at times surprisingly similar character are brought to the fore, making for a fascinating listen. Furthermore, the album concludes with another piece, the Cello Concerto RV402, performed on the bassoon. Beyond his virtuosic technique, the charm of his tone and the atmosphere he creates in the gentle melodies is exceptional. Azzolini brings out the very best in the concertos that Vivaldi wrote for master musicians.
