Based on the Greek myth \"Orpheus,\" Monteverdi's opera \"Orfeo\" (premiered in 1607) is a masterpiece of early Baroque opera. The story goes that just after shepherds and nymphs gather in a field to celebrate the wedding of Orfeo and Eurydice, Eurydice is bitten by a poisonous snake and dies. Orfeo goes to Hades to have his wife returned to him, where Plutone, the king of the underworld, allows him to bring her back with the promise that he will never look back until he returns to earth. However, Orfeo is unable to bear it, and as soon as he turns his back, they are separated. Apollo, the sun god, appears to the grieving Orfeo and offers him immortal life, and the two ascend to heaven, where they are seen off by the shepherds. In this recording, Emiliano Gonzalez Toro, a tenor of transformative singing and acting ability, sings the title role and conducts. Euridice is Emeke Barat, a Hungarian soprano with a beautiful, clear voice.The performance is by I Gimelli, led by Emiliano Gonzalez Toro.
