Bach: The Complete Keyboard Concertos*, now released by Hyperion. This 2-CD set follows the highly acclaimed *The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1*, released in 2025. Esfahani conducts while playing the harpsichord, performing Bach’s eight keyboard concertos and the Triple Concerto, BWV 1044, alongside his long-time collaborators, the Britten Sinfonia. Since making his London debut in 2009, Esfahani has made it his life’s mission to restore the harpsichord to its rightful place as a mainstream concert instrument. Aiming to dispel the preconception that the harpsichord is an “old” instrument, he has deliberately chosen to use modern instruments rather than period instruments on this album. According to Esfahani, Bach’s keyboard concertos are “works that Bach effectively created as a genre in their own right.” They transformed the keyboard instrument from a basso continuo instrument into a virtuosic solo instrument capable of direct dialogue with the ensemble, and further served as an “outward-looking, ‘public’ expression” of Bach’s artistry, directed at a new audience beyond the confines of the church and the court.
