He was the first harpsichordist to be named a “New Generation Artist” by BBC Radio 3, and he is also the recipient of the Borletti-Buitoni Foundation Award and and was the first harpsichordist to be nominated for both the Royal Philharmonic Society’s “Instrumentalist of the Year” award in 2014 and the Gramophone Award’s “Artist of the Year” in 2014. In 2015, she was named “Newcomer of the Year” by BBC Music Magazine, and was nominated for “Artist of the Year” at the Gramophone Awards in both 2015 and 2017.

This program showcases Esfahani’s true worth—he has taken the world by storm with a repertoire spanning an astonishingly wide range, from the highly demanding music of 16th- and 17th-century English virginalists to the classic works of J.S. Bach and even minimalist music. From Toru Takemitsu to Henry Cowell, Kaija Saariaho, Gavin Bryars, Luc Ferrari, and other leading contemporary composers—as well as a work written for Esfahani by a young composer from his native Iran and a friend of his, —a collection of works for modern harpsichord (+ electronics) brought to life by Mahan Esfahani’s precise fingering (and, at times, his fists). The title, “Music? (Musique?)”, is taken from Ferrari’s work “Socialist Music? (Musiquesocialiste?)”.
Tokyo M Plus

Tracklisting:

1.Rain dreaming for solo harpsichord
2.Set of four for solo harpsichord~Rondo
3.Set of four for solo harpsichord~Ostinato
4.Set of four for solo harpsichord~Chorale
5.Set of four for solo harpsichord~Fugue - Resume
6.Jardin secret II for solo harpsichord and electronics
7.After Handel's 'Vesper' for solo harpsichord
8.Intertwined distances for solo harpsichord and electronics
9.Programme commun "Musique socialiste? for solo harpsichord and electronics
