This CD contains songs by Lalo, who is known as the composer of the \"Spanish Symphony\" with its exotic and exuberant sound. Lalo's poetic sentiment can be heard in the world of songs he wrote throughout his life. Many of them were written for the vocal range of his wife, an alto singer, but the songs on this CD are sung by a baritone. Some of the poems are written for poems that reveal the contradictions of society during the turbulent times of the Civil Revolution and the Franco-Prussian War (\"The Old Wanderer\" and \"The Poor Woman\"), others are gentle and lovely (\"If I Were a Little Bird\"), and still others are peaceful and lonely (\"Songs of Burgundy\") performed by a trio of oboe, song, and piano. The range of expression is varied, including the tranquil and lonely \"Songs of Burgundy\" performed by oboe, song, and piano trio. The world of Lalo's songs, which are often overshadowed by Debussy and Fauré among French songs, is brought to life by the expressive baritone of Christoyannis and the florid piano of Cohen.
