These trio sonatas possess a unique character; the two upper voices do not merely adhere to the imitative techniques common in Italy at the time, but are allowed to develop freely and expressively. In other words, by combining the violin, viola, and viola d’amore in various ways, and further altering the tension and pitch of the strings through scordatura (alternate tuning), he produces rich harmonies and skillful passages while employing a sound that is at times sharp and at other times soft.
