Christie remarked, “I’m currently at a stage in my life where I’m able to do what I love,” adding that she holds Haydn’s works in the highest regard and that they had long been on her “to-do list” (on her desk). While she has recorded oratorios in the past, this is her first time tackling symphonies! As a musician who has dedicated many years to Baroque music, Christie speaks of her extraordinary passion for Haydn: she intends to pay the utmost respect to his works, re-examine their true value, bring a fresh perspective to them, and devote herself entirely to Haydn. The brilliance of Les Arts Florissants’ instrumentalists is brought out in the finest possible way, and every note is filled with joy, brightness, and lightness.

Haydn’s “Paris Symphonies” were all written for the newly established Paris orchestra, the Concert de l’Olympique; however, since the orchestra Haydn conducted in Vienna was smaller than this one, he believes they were performed by orchestras of various sizes. However, he also notes that since they were written for a Parisian audience, they possess the flamboyance favored by the French, and it is certain that these works truly showcase the precision and quality of this new Parisian orchestra’s ensemble. Here, it is performed with the following instrumentation: 6 first violins, 4–6 second violins, 3–4 violas, 4–5 cellos, 2 double basses, and wind instruments.

Violin Concerto No. 1 was written for Luigi Tomassini, a composer and virtuoso violinist who served as concertmaster of the Esterházy court orchestra (comprising about 15 musicians in total). It is a work for string ensemble and soloist. It is said that Christie entrusted the conducting to de Swarte for this performance, while he himself sat among the orchestra members both during rehearsals and the actual performance. This masterpiece showcases Haydn’s mastery of the refined Italian style, shaped by his training under Porpora. De Swarte’s fresh yet bold interpretation is also worth noting.

As this is a live recording, applause can be heard after the final movement of each piece.
King International

Tracklisting:

1.Symphony No. 84 Hob.
