It’s Beethoven’s piano concertos performed by Cassioli and Ensemble Resonanz, led by Minage!! From the late 1990s through the early 2000s, Cassioli performed these piano concertos—based on versions he himself refined and finalized from the various variants Beethoven left behind—with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. As time passed and scholarly research progressed, Cassioli reexamined Beethoven’s original manuscripts and arrived at a version of the Piano Concerto No. 4 featuring a more varied and virtuosic piano part. The first movement features a cadenza by Beethoven, and the imaginative ornamentation in the final movement is charming. Furthermore, regarding the “piano version of the Violin Concerto” written by Beethoven himself, “it includes timpani, and many violinists perform it based on the cadenza Beethoven himself wrote for the piano version” (no cadenza by Beethoven for the “Violin Concerto” has survived)—it is very well known, but opportunities to hear it performed live are quite rare. This recording, featuring such a stellar lineup, is most welcome! Cassioli’s performance is truly brimming with creativity; in particular, the cadenza for the “piano version written by Beethoven” piano cadenza—which at times evokes the “Pathétique” or “Moonlight” sonatas with its fantastical and virtuosic qualities—not only conveys a strong sense of Beethoven’s presence but also shines with Cassioli’s eloquent and incisive music. Of course, it goes without saying that the sound of Ensemble Resonanz, led by Minage, is truly rich and full. Minaji, too, has thoroughly examined the score; by applying the articulations Beethoven wrote for the strings to the wind instruments as well, the orchestra produces a stunningly rich and majestic legato sound.
