For this release, he leads his regular ensemble, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, in a program featuring works from his native America. Rather than contemporary minimalist music, this collection features traditional orchestral pieces composed more than half a century ago.
The centerpiece is “Symphonic Dances,” in which Bernstein himself reworked the music from *West Side Story* into a symphonic suite. On the 60th anniversary of its premiere, Gaffigan reconstructs this piece with a fresh recording and a youthful sensibility. Additionally, Barber’s first orchestral work, *The School for Scandal*, and *Andante for Strings* by Ruth Crawford Seeger—a female composer who demonstrated a remarkably progressive sensibility—were both composed in 1931, during the Great Depression in America. Originally the third movement of a string quartet, the composer adapted it for string orchestra; its soundscape, featuring distinct tone clusters, is filled with a freshness that defies belief that it was composed 90 years ago.
Another key theme of this album is the “organ.” Ives’s Symphony No. 3, “The Gathering at Camp,” was originally composed as an organ piece for the church where he served as organist, but he later adapted it for orchestra. With its numerous references to hymns, the piece exudes a devout atmosphere. Barber’s “Festive Toccata,” composed to celebrate the installation of a new organ at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, is a rich and satisfying work that allows listeners to enjoy the organ’s solemn grandeur as well as its showy techniques, including those on the pedalboard. The magnificent performance by renowned American virtuoso Paul Jacobs, born in 1977, is a must-hear.
King International

Tracklisting:

1.Symphonic Dances from West Side Story~Prologue (Allegro moderato)
2.Symphonic Dances from West Side Story~Somewhere (Adagio)
3.Symphonic Dances from West Side Story~Scherzo (Vivace e leggiero)
4.Symphonic Dances from West Side Story~Mambo (Meno presto)
5.Symphonic Dances from West Side Story~Cha-Cha (Andantino con grazia)
6.Symphonic Dances from West Side Story~Meeting Scene (Meno mosso)
7.Symphonic Dances from West Side Story~Cool Fugue (Allegretto)
8.Symphonic Dances from West Side Story~Rumble (Molto allegro)
9.Symphonic Dances from West Side Story~Finale (Adagio)
10.Symphony No. 3 "The Camp Meeting"~I.
