In December 2017, they recorded all five concertos in a single 10-day session—a blissful ten days during which everyone immersed themselves fully in Beethoven’s music. Having meticulously consulted the latest critical editions, they have faithfully rendered articulations and dynamics that had previously been overlooked, resulting in a performance that is more thorough and nuanced than ever.\n\nOne is taken aback by the powerful yet gentle orchestral sound at the opening of the “Emperor.” Listening to the light and brilliant passages that follow, performed by Bezaidenhout, one can sense the shock and anticipation that people in Beethoven’s time must have felt. Needless to say, Bezidenhout’s beauty in the slow movement is remarkable, but the delicacy and crispness in the final movement, along with the exquisite balance of the FBO’s interplay under the direction of Elas-Casado, are also truly wonderful. In Symphony No. 2, everything is simply exquisite: the lighthearted, operatic overture-like opening; the intimate dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra in the slow movement; and the brisk tempo of the final movement. The cadenza in the first movement was included at Bezaydenhout’s express request; it is based on the cadenza that Levin improvised for the 1999 recording of this piece by Gardiner (Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique) and Robert Levin, which was based on a cadenza that Levin improvised—and this performance is a magnificent display of virtuosity and rich musicality, making it a must-hear.
