One of the key areas of Janacek's creativity was choral music, of which he left behind a considerable body of work during his lifetime. Many of these are based on Moravian folk songs as their source material, and they have a distinctive flavor filled with deep melancholy and bitterness that is unique to Janacek. Here is a fascinating selection of seven works, both folk and religious, that provide a bird's-eye view of Janacek's choral world. Of interest are Janacek's arrangements for mixed chorus of six pieces from the \"Moravian Duet\" by his great predecessor in his native country, Dvořák, whose distinctive harmonies add to the increasingly folkloric flavor. It is a rare treasure in which the genius of both Dvořák and Janácek is doubled. The lament for the loss of a beloved daughter, \"Lament for the Death of My Daughter Olga,\" is also a heartbreaking piece of music. Capella Amsterdam was founded in 1970. The orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Reuss, boasts a wide repertoire ranging from classical to modern and contemporary music, and here, too, they reproduce a unique world rich in folkloric colors in a superb Czech language.Born in 1961, Daniel Reuss studied choral conducting at the Rotterdam Conservatory and became the conductor of Capella Amsterdam in 1990 and made his conducting debut with the RIAS Chamber Choir in 2000.From 2003-2007, he was the principal conductor of the RIAS Chamber Choir Berlin. He appeared at the Lucerne Festival Academy in 2006 as a conducting mentor at the invitation of Boulez, and since 2015 has served as principal conductor of the Lausanne Vocal Ensemble.
