He was later court music director in Mantova, Rome, and Vienna, and also spent time in Spain. 78 operas and more than 40 oratorios, his style is a fusion of the baroque and the transition to the next era. The oratorios were probably performed in Venice, and Jacobs, in Venetian fashion, has a diverse group of instruments: organ, cembalo, theorbo, lute, cello, violone, viola da gamba, and bassoon for the basso continuo. Each voice has its own vocal range, making the characters' personalities clear. The orchestration is provided by Ensemble 415, which tightens and enlivens the whole.
