Founded in London in 1945, the Philharmonia has had Esa-Pekka Salonen as its Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor since 2008. In the hands of these superb players, the Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune is a dizzying world of sound: you surrender to the melodies passed from instrument to instrument, and the dream is over almost before it has begun. Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien is often described as the summation of Debussy's musical language, and here it is full of mystery, a palace of harmony and colour rising up before your eyes. La Mer, too, is magnificent, its broad phrasing and forward-moving tempos creating a vividly pictorial world. Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien began life as incidental music for a 4,000-line mystery play by the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio. In the story, Sebastian sees twin brothers about to be executed by pagans, awakens to Christian faith and works miracles, only to be put to death himself in the end. A complete reading of the text takes more than four hours, while Debussy's music lasts barely an hour, so the work is now usually heard in excerpts or, as here, in the four-movement symphonic fragments. The circumstances were desperately tight: Debussy signed the contract in December 1910, the poem was due to be completed in March 1911, and the premiere took place in May. It is generally thought that financial difficulties led him to accept the commission.
