The ensemble is the Balthasar-Neumann Choir \u0026amp; Ensemble, founded by Thomas Hengelbrock and named for the Baroque architect Balthasar Neumann (1687-1753). This is the first volume of a project that will include selected pieces from Monteverdi's \"Ethical and Religious Forest\"! Between 1582 and 1619, Monteverdi published not less than ten scores (madrigales, canzonettas, \"Musical Humor\", and even \"Evening Prayer of the Virgin Mary\"). After 1619, however, he composed a vast number of works for St. Mark's Basilica and the Italian court, but no scores were published until 1638, when the eighth volume of his Madrigale collection was published (it is believed that a vast number of works were lost). And it was not until 1640 that The Ethical and Religious Forest was published.It is dedicated to Eleonora Gonzaga, daughter of Monteverdi's patron Vincenzo I Gonzaga (1562-1612). At the time, in order for a composer to publish a score, it had to contain about 10 parts (9 for voices and instrumentalists, 1 for a bass with a continuo), plus works in a variety of styles (about 40), and some of these works had to be quite large. Monteverdi included many aspects of his art in this \"Ethical and Religious Forest. He included old and new styles, vocal and instrumental music, and even works for double choir. He also included many motets for solo or double voices plus bass, which became the basis for his later operas. There is also enough religious music to cover a full year of worship services.The first part consists of five madrigales, the second part of a mass, the third part of music for evening prayer, and the fourth part of four solo motets, including \"Madonna's Lament,\" a parody of \"Arianna's Lament\" in religious music.
