Isabelle Faust. Alexander Melnikov

Description:

A journey through time and space, Kelas takes us on a journey through time and space, where Kelas's cello brilliantly blends traditional European and Middle Eastern music with contemporary music. The ancient melodies of Kelas's cello, played to fascinating rhythms, are combined with the sounds of the percussion instrument, the lyra, and the bustle of ancient peoples coming and going. The project straddles the boundaries between the ancient and the modern with frighteningly precise technique, and Kellas's work spans a wide range of time periods and regions. The title THRACE refers to Thrace, a region that flourished in the 2nd and 3rd centuries B.C. and was the site of a rich cultural exchange, but the album captures the sonic landscape of Greece, Turkey, and Bulgaria. The enchanting melodies created by the mixture of Kelas's cello tones and Sinopoulos's lyra tones, as well as the percussion virtuosity of the Shemirani brothers, are also a draw to this album. Kelas blends himself and his cello into the world of rhythms and tones created by his childhood friends, the master percussionists, the Schemillani brothers, and Sinopoulos, a lilac virtuoso who has known Kelas for 12 years. In June 2016, Kellas visited Japan with the members of this album and its program, and the audience went wild. Kellas himself says, "This is a project I have always wanted to work on. This is a disc that will once again surprise you with Kellas's musical ability, which is both ever-changing and extremely flexible. The first piece on this CD, "Hamsa," is by a contemporary composer, and although it is written in five time signatures, the rhythm is unfamiliar to the ears accustomed to Western music, and the listener is instantly drawn into a different world from the very first track. Sunday Morning, which is also the title of the album, is Sinopoulos' arrangement of a traditional Greek marriage song. In Crete, the lyra is said to be an essential part of the music for celebrating marriage. Lutoslawski's work is diverse in its use of microtones and matches the acoustics of traditional music. Also, Wittmann's work Digital Etude (the French word digital also means "finger"), written as a memorial to Boulez, is completely unbowed and consists only of pizzicato and tapping of the cello itself, which is reminiscent of the percussion of the Schemillani brothers. The whole piece is so skillfully composed that, if one listens to it without looking at the program, it is difficult to distinguish whether it is traditional or contemporary music. The cello and lira tones are also exquisitely matched. Here is a sophisticated fusion of cultures and civilizations that could only have been achieved by a virtuoso like Kellas.
