Volume 1 centred on the Violin Concerto with Faust in the spotlight, Volume 2 on the Piano Concerto with Melnikov, and this concluding third volume brings Queyras to the fore in the Cello Concerto, coupled with the Piano Trio No. 1, in which all three players' ensemble can be savoured.\n\nThe project - to record Schumann's three concertos (piano, violin and cello) together with the three piano trios - is said to have taken shape while the three musicians were touring Schumann's piano trios in Europe. Gut-strung string instruments and a fortepiano are used, and the orchestra is the Freiburger Barockorchester, scaled to match the solo instruments, under the outstanding young conductor Pablo Heras-Casado. The superb balance between orchestra and soloist and the naturalness of the articulation sweep away received ideas: a genuinely new Schumann series that only these artists could have made.\n\nThe Cello Concerto was written shortly after Schumann took up his post as municipal music director in Düsseldorf, at a time of intense creative energy. Rather than putting the soloist front and centre, it makes the orchestral writing and the cello's virtuosity resonate as a single fabric, and Queyras plays with cool refinement even in the accompanied cadenza of the third movement. Heras-Casado, the Freiburger Barockorchester and Queyras respond to one another with quiet intelligence and passion in a deeply satisfying performance.\n\nThe Piano Trio No. 1 was completed in 1847 as a birthday present for Schumann's wife Clara, written under the influence of Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor. The first movement, of which Clara was particularly fond, opens with a graceful, expansive melody and makes effective use of the cello's most resonant register - an ideal coupling for the Cello Concerto.
