Pablo Elas-Casado's second HMF concert is Mendelssohn with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. It is a big piece, Symphony No. 2. The Second Symphony was composed in June 1840 for the 400th anniversary of the inventor of printing, Gutenberg, and was premiered at the Thomas Church in Bach's honor as part of the festivities, It is a work of Mendelssohn's genius and divine brilliance. The triumphant theme that opens the symphony is played on a high note, leading to a lively three-movement symphonic section, which is followed by a cantata section with a chorus. The Lutheran chorale, performed by an unaccompanied eight-part chorus at the beginning of the seventh chorale in the cantata section, is very impressive (Bach also wrote cantatas BWV 9 and 192 using this chorale), and the world expands further with the addition of orchestral music. The finale is a massive choral fugue, with the triumphant theme that appears at the beginning played at high pitch, leading to a moving finale. Elas-Cassado's conducting is very full sounding, leading each phrase softly. The festive atmosphere of the work was never lost on the singers. The singers are well rounded, including Kark and Schade, who sang solos in the Ninth Symphony with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra led by Jansons, and Landeshammer, who sings the praise to the Matthew Passion by Chailly. The solid ensemble of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Germany's premier orchestra, combines thickness and softness, and the beautiful chorus all blend together to create a world of Mendelssohn at his best.
