Mussorgsky's \"Pictures at an Exhibition\" was inspired by a painting that impressed his friend Victor Hartmann at an exhibition of his paintings, but the music goes beyond the world of Hartmann's images, sometimes ambiguous, sometimes not always matching the images of the painting. The music is sometimes ambiguous and does not always match the images of the paintings.As for Schumann's Fantasy, the work initially had evocative titles for each movement. Eventually, these were removed, and each movement is now accompanied only by Schlegel's poem as its motto.
