It is a 2-CD set. The album’s opening track, “Albumblatt,” was written in 1853 when Brahms was 20 years old and was discovered by British conductor and musicologist Christopher Hogwood. Hogwood also edited the piece according to the Bärenreiter edition. In 2012, Schiff was invited by BBC Radio in the UK to give the piece’s first broadcast performance, and the beauty of the work became a topic of much discussion at that time. Although it had technically been premiered before then, Schiff remarked, “Discovering an unknown work by a great composer is a joy beyond compare.” Since all the works on this album, with the exception of the “Albumblatt,” were composed during the later period of Brahms’s life, Schiff hopes listeners will regard this “Albumblatt” as an introduction to those works—or as a “portrait of the artist in his youth.” The booklet also features Schiff’s own comments on each piece.
