A supreme duo of composers performing works by two of their closest friends. New album to mark the 40th anniversary of the ECM New Series Violinist Yuko Shiokawa and pianist András Schiff will perform the third album in the ECM New Series. Their first duo album was Schubert's Fantasie. The second was the 2017 Bach, Busoni, and Beethoven Sonatas for Violin and Piano, an album described by Strad as "a deeply thought-out and determined program, each cleverly related to the other." The two sonatas on this album are Brahms' Violin Sonata No. 1 and Schumann's Violin Sonata No. 2. Brahms' Violin Sonata No. 1 in G major, known as the "Rain Song" Sonata, is richly interpreted. Schumann's Violin Sonata No. 2 in D minor, on the other hand, is at times vigorous and driving, providing a thought-provoking contrast to Brahms' sonata. Shiokawa and Schiff have made the music of these two composers, who were close friends, completely their own, and once again they present their unique interpretations on this album.Produced and recorded by Manfred Eicher.
