When singing a modern ‘song without words,’ I wanted the sound to be not like that of a cello in a concert hall, but rather like the sound resonating right next to my ear as I play.”\nTo express the intimacy Gregson was seeking, he used valve reverb, spring reverb, plate reverb, analog delay, a harmonizer, a vocoder, and ’80s-style digital reverb—and this is largely why *Patina* doesn’t sound like a typical classical music release.\n\nGregson, who began playing the cello at age four, still uses it as his primary instrument for composition. He is prolific and boasts a truly impressive resume, having achieved success in film, video games, ballet, and the music for mega-hit series such as *Bridgerton*.
