Description:

"Immerse Yourself in the Ring," An Ideal Introduction to Wagner's Masterpiece, 2 CDs Long out of print, British musicologist Derrick Cook's "An Introduction to 'The Ring of the Nibelung'" is now available on CD. Cook has written a commentary on Wagner's opera "The Ring of the Nibelung" and narrated it himself. Together with the coupling tracks from the original LP, "Siegfried Pastorale," led by the Vienna Philharmonic violinist Walter Wöhler, and "The Children's Question and Answer," a charming work Wagner composed for his wife Cosima, the entire contents of the original three LPs are included. The collection contains all of the contents of the original three LPs. Cook uses excerpts from the complete Decca recording to illustrate the light motifs that underpin the drama of "The Ring" and their role in advancing it. In addition, Sir Georg Solti and the Vienna Philharmonic recorded many excerpts specifically for this commentary. For clarity, the excerpts are played slowly, stretched, and without singing.Decca's recording of the complete Ring of the Nibelung under Sir Georg Solti, completed in 1966 with Valkyrie, is considered the greatest recording of all time, and when the complete cycle was released together for the first time three years later, it was accompanied by this introduction by Derrick Cook. This introduction by Derrick Cook was included as a 3-LP set. It was a request from John Culshaw, the producer of Decca's "Ring". Cook wanted listeners to have no prior knowledge, but to immerse themselves first and foremost in the world of The Ring and its universal themes of love, power, self-awareness, and tragedy. The booklet re-publishes the original commentary. It includes detailed track-by-track pointers and newly posted music examples to help listeners understand the story. This set is an ideal introduction to Wagner's Ring, forever challenging and valuable, and will teach novice and experienced listeners alike much about the work of the theatrical genius. The music examples, previously handwritten transcriptions, have been newly transcribed using music notation software. Universal Music/IMS
