She lived in Paris until the age of 8, then returned to Athens, where she entered the Athens Conservatory at age 14 to study piano and voice. She spent some time studying at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Italy, but returned to Athens during World War II to teach at the conservatory. She moved to France in 1949, where she befriended Ravel and the “Group of Six,” and gained high acclaim for her interpretations of their songs. She retired in 1970 and subsequently devoted herself to teaching at institutions such as the Schola Cantorum. She passed away in Paris in 1927. She never appeared on the opera stage, devoting most of her life to art songs. Since the vast majority of her recordings were made for the Decca label, it is fair to say that these four albums represent “the finest recordings of Irma Corassi’s singing.” Whether it is art songs with understated piano accompaniment or Chausson’s passionate “Poème de l’amour et de la mer” with an orchestra, each performance is a marvel, revealing a deep passion and rich expressiveness beneath a refined and restrained delivery. Greek folk songs, which are part of her heritage, are also where she truly shines.
