In addition to Coltrane on tenor saxophone, the lineup included trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Dewey Johnson; saxophonists Pharoah Sanders, Marion Brown, John Tchicai, and Archie Shepp; pianist McCoy Tyner; bassists Art Davis and Jimmy Garrison; and drummer Elvin Jones.\nReleased for the first time as a two-LP set, this album is part of the Verve Vault series, mastered from analog tape and pressed on 180g vinyl by Optimal.\nAlthough *Ascension* initially sparked controversy due to its intensity and freedom, it is now widely recognized as a landmark of modern jazz and a symbol of the emerging free jazz movement. Listening to both takes together highlights the organic, ever-changing nature of the performance and reaffirms this album’s enduring status within Coltrane’s artistic legacy.\nThis year marks the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane’s birth. To commemorate this occasion, numerous vinyl reissues and other projects are underway.
