Collaboration has always been at the heart of our creative process. While one person might write a song, it isn’t truly a Yes song unless everyone contributes. We’re not trying to simply repeat the past. We’re moving the spirit of Yes forward and transforming it into something new. When Yes first began sketching out the ideas that would later become Aurora, the process was free and exploratory. There wasn’t a preconceived concept at the outset—only a collection of musical fragments. Gradually, these fragments found each other and began to take shape. Among the early ideas was a song titled “Aurora,” and it soon became clear that the name held a particular appeal. It evoked values that resonated deeply with the band—light, emergence, and a sense of vastness. John Davison revealed, “The title immediately resonated with Steve Howe and sparked visual inspiration for artist Roger Dean, setting the conceptual direction that would guide the project.” Work on Aurora began almost immediately after the “Classic Tales of Yes” tour concluded in 2024. Ideas for the new album came quickly, and with the label’s encouragement, they had time to develop the material organically. Rather than gathering in a single studio for months on end, they adopted a modern workflow. They generated ideas in their home studios, shaped them individually, and then wove them together through constant collaboration. Downs and Howe often served as the creative core, with Howe also acting as the producer—the point where all ideas ultimately converged. Throughout Aurora, each track possesses its own distinct character. While some echo Yes’s classic approach and others push the band into new territory, when combined, they form a cohesive whole that respects the band’s tradition while embracing a forward-looking spirit.
