The album titled “Bologna 1666,” released in 2017, introduced the music of the Bologna School, which was the most important musical center in 17th-century Italy. Founded in 1666, the “Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna”—one of Italy’s largest music academies—exerted an influence on the music of this era in Europe that extended far beyond Italy’s borders. However, with the exception of Trelli, most of the compositions have been forgotten.\n\nThis second album, which focuses on the little-known Bolognese School, sheds light not only on instrumental works but also on vocal works from that era, featuring the outstanding Catalan soprano Nuria Rial. The three vocal works repeatedly employ images and metaphors related to “air.” Specifically, they depict the anxious thoughts of a lover who, as if driven by the air, cannot find peace and suffers in anguish (Colonna’s aria “Pensierivaganti”); or the story of an angel descending from heaven to save people (Perti’s cantata “Vienipurconituoivezzi”), or the aura that permeates a sacred place (Polaro’s motet “Auraesacraeamatiardores”).
