The Lucerne Festival String Orchestra was organized in 1956 by Rudolf Baumgartner and violinist Wolfgang Schneiderhan as an ensemble for the Lucerne Music Festival, and played a role in the postwar Baroque boom as a renowned Baroque music performance. Currently, Daniel Dodds, who was praised by Milshtein as \"like Paganini's grandson,\" is the concertmaster and music director of the orchestra, which is highly acclaimed as a chamber orchestra including wind members. K.250 (248b) in D major, known as the Haffner Serenade, was commissioned by Johann Siegmund Haffner II, a wealthy Salzburg merchant, in 1776, who asked Mozart to play it for the eve of the wedding of the Haffner family. Of all the pieces Mozart composed in Salzburg, this serenade is probably the undeniable jewel. However, it has faded in the shadow of the other Serenade (later known as the Symphony in D major, K. 385, \"Haffner Symphony\"), which became famous when Kreisler arranged the fourth movement into a piece for violin and piano. The slow introductions to the first and last movements of this serenade give it a sense of gravitas, and the concerto minuet in the second-fourth movements is in a minor key, contrary to tradition, but surprisingly witty. The melody is by no means serious; it is a minor variant of the folk song known today as \"Im M?rzen der Bauer.\" Conductor\/violinist Daniel Dodds plays the violin solo on this album. The tempo is crisp and lively, with the use of ancient instruments for trumpet and timpani, as is typical of modern orchestras, and the fresh balance of sound and the beauty of the harmony are highlighted. As a bonus track, the world premiere recording of Vincenzo Liggini's (1756-1812) \"Armonia con Capriccio\" was made. Liggini was a tenor singer, a member of the theater ensemble in Prague, and a composer who was a contemporary of Mozart. This is a beautiful piece for violin and orchestra based on an aria from his opera \"Jerusalem Saved\".
