Inspired by this piece, the contemporary composer Henze created his own “Tristan” for piano, electronic music tape, and orchestra. Henze’s work is also sure to draw attention in this performance, featuring the Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Welser-Möst. While centering on these two “Tristans,” the program also features the Adagio from Mahler’s final (unfinished) symphony, with Franz Liszt’s famous “Love Dream” and “Evening Melody” serving as the opening and closing pieces—a touch that is quintessentially Levitt.\n\nIgor Levit\nBorn in Novgorod, Russia, in 1987. He demonstrated precocious talent by making his debut with an orchestra at the age of six and went on to win competitions around the world.
