He studied at the music school in his hometown, where his first teacher, Václav Lanka, recognized his talent and nurtured it with great care. Burva made his debut at the age of 13, and his talent was recognized both within and outside the Czech Republic. However, after suffering an accident in 1971 that forced him to take a one-year hiatus from performing, he reevaluated his commitment to his art and sought asylum in Luxembourg the following year. Just as he was beginning to gain international recognition through his numerous recordings, tragedy struck him once again. In March 1996, he slipped and fell on an icy road, injuring his left hand. Although he initially resolved to retire, his passion for music proved too strong to resist, and after repeated surgeries and rehabilitation, he made his comeback in 2009.\n\nOn this album, his latest recording from 2019, you can hear sonatas by three composers that are truly brimming with “love for music.” The two sonatas by Beethoven—whose 250th birthday anniversary falls in 2020—are both relatively short works consisting of two movements. They are melodic pieces that offer a glimpse into Beethoven’s gentler side; in particular, Sonata No. 27 is so rich in “song” that it is said to have influenced Schubert. Boulva’s performance is deeply evocative, as if he were cherishing every melody. In the subsequent piece by Scriabin, while he proceeds with a matter-of-fact approach, he carefully brings out the sensuality Scriabin sought in the third movement. And last but not least is the sonata by Martinů. Composed in 1954 toward the end of his life, this work is dedicated to his close friend Rudolf Serkin. It is a powerful piece said to embody Martinů’s longing for his homeland, the Czech Republic, which he had left and to which he was ultimately unable to return; Boulva, understanding the intent of his fellow Czech composer, meticulously weaves together the ever-shifting musical ideas.
