During his three-year stay in Italy, he visited Florence, Venice, Naples, and Rome; while in Rome in 1707, he was commissioned by Cardinal Colonna (1665–1739) to compose music for the Vespers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This famous “Dixit Dominus” was premiered on July 16, 1707, at the Church of Santa Maria in Montesanto, and it is believed that Handel himself conducted the work. Two antiphons (HWV 235 and 243) were also performed for this occasion.\n\nThis album recreates the performance of “Dixit Dominus” in the Mass format used at its premiere, and the recording was made at the historic Church of Santa Maria in Monte Santo in Rome, the very site of the original premiere. While there have been previous period-style recordings by Andrew Parrott, this one is based on historical records of the Carmelite Order and research by experts in Roman liturgical music. It also includes works and hymns by other 17th- and 18th-century composers that were likely performed at the time.\n\n“Musica Antica Latina” was founded in 2000 by Baroque cellist Giordano Antonelli (a student of Ivan Monigetti and currently principal cellist of Il Giardino Armonico). Specializing in Baroque and pre-Classical music, the ensemble conducts meticulous research using sources and manuscripts from major Italian archives to decipher hidden rhetorical figures, symbols, and patterns, tracing the fusion of sacred orthodoxy and theatrical melodies. The ensemble has earned high acclaim for unearthing and performing a variety of previously unpublished programs.\n\n“Coro da Camera Italiano” was founded in Rome in 1991, and its repertoire focuses primarily on music from the Renaissance through the Classical period. Although the ensemble does not have a permanent music director, it collaborates with various conductors, soloists, and period instrument ensembles.
