As he revisited the work ahead of the 10th anniversary, he felt the urge to give Joe his own story and began reworking the album to tell that tale. The band returned to the studio with producer Steve Fisk to refine the lyrics, revise the arrangements, and record new songs in their characteristic \"Denial\" style. New tracks include \"Optimistic Son\" and the powerful \"Joe Drives Again.\" The result retains the darkness and youthful cynicism of *Teens of Denial*, while subtly incorporating the compassion gained through hardship.\n\nFrom Will Toledo:\nLast year, I was asked if there was anything we could do to mark the 10th anniversary of *Teens of Denial*, so I began looking back at the album. While we’ve played some of the tracks regularly over the past decade, we’d rarely taken a deep look at the album as a whole since its release. Many of the songs were written over the course of two years toward the end of our college days, as we grappled with cynicism and pent-up aggression. By the time the songs were finished, I was living in Washington, D.C., and Car Seat Headrest had become a band signed to a label. Despite the chaos of the production process, the final album turned out to be a fun project for everyone involved.\nLooking back at the songs now, I’ve started to feel like there’s a story being told throughout the album—even though I hadn’t originally conceived it as a narrative work. Daniel Johnston used the name “Joe” on several tracks on *Hi, How Are You?*—*No More Pushing Joe Around* and *Keep Punching Joe*—as a stand-in for himself, as a kind of joke. I borrowed that idea and the name for the song title. And this time, I started wondering... Who exactly is Joe? As soon as I began asking this question, a story with surprisingly clear contours emerged, as if I’d unearthed the foundations of an ancient city while digging in my backyard. As I dug deeper, some of the songs from the original album fell by the wayside because they didn’t fit into this new context. Other songs, meanwhile, demanded new lyrics to fully bring to life the stories hidden within the music.
