Through the 11 tracks on *Autosmile*, @ reinterprets the psychedelic folk tradition as an unmistakably contemporary art form, carefully balancing beauty and anguish as they oscillate between black-hole-like gravity and quiet acceptance —This is evident in the album’s lead single, the epic, nearly 7-minute title track “Autosmile.” Poetically transforming a mysterious parting into a demonological inquiry, the song—with its intertwining vocal harmonies and warm acoustic backdrop—gradually builds in intensity as a fiery lead guitar joins the tambourine and guiro. The song has been released alongside a music video.\n\nThe two were drawn to the DIY live music scene that thrived on the U.S. East Coast, with shows held in homes and basements. While Victoria worked as a beekeeper and Stone as a self-taught programmer, they began performing noise music in basements and built their careers in warehouse spaces and all-ages venues. Victoria has released several works under the name BrittleBrian, and Stone has been active in recent years under the name E.R.Visit. Eventually, the two began collaborating long-distance and soon established a method unique to @—one in which half the tracks are by Victoria and half by Stone, with each filling in the gaps in the other’s compositions. @ is a collective, a team, and a two-headed cat.\n\nThis collaboration culminated in a captivating, timeless body of work.\n\nThrough the unpredictable channels of the internet, @’s debut album, *MindPalaceMusic*, reached far more listeners than either of them could have imagined. Considering that “@” is a band name that’s intentionally obscure and extremely difficult to search for, the fact that this album spread organically was nothing short of a miracle. Prior to their debut album, all of their collaborations had taken place remotely; @ had never performed live, nor had they ever sung harmonies in the same physical space. Over the following years, @ practiced extensively as a band and learned how to perform their music in front of audiences of all sizes. The process of layering their voices in the same space and evolving into a powerful live band had a major influence on the arrangements for *Autosmile*.
