Her much-discussed opera \"Cinderella\", written when she was just eight years old, is now released on video by Sony Classical.\n\nThe composer, violinist and pianist Alma Deutscher was born in 2005 in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. Her parents, a university professor and a linguist, are both amateur musicians. At the age of three she was moved by hearing Richard Strauss's song \"Wiegenlied\"; by four all kinds of melodies were coming into her head; at five she was writing an opera based on the story of \"Don Alonzo\", and at six a piano sonata. She wrote a violin concerto at nine and a piano concerto at twelve, giving the premiere of the latter herself as soloist. She loves Mozart, Schubert and Tchaikovsky, and is also interested in women composers such as Fanny Mendelssohn and Mozart's sister Nannerl. \"Just as Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google, changed the world,\" she has said, \"I want to change the world too.\" In August 2018 she made her Lucerne Festival debut as composer, violinist and pianist, performing her own works alongside a Bach partita and a Scarlatti sonata; in September she appeared with members of the Vienna Philharmonic on a northern European cruise, presenting \"Cinderella\". She began composing the opera at eight and completed a chamber version at ten, and it was premiered in Israel in 2015. The following year, in Vienna, an expanded version with a revised structure and larger forces was realised with the support of Zubin Mehta, and caused a sensation (that production was sung in German). In December 2017 it was staged in English at Opera San José in the United States, with Jane Glover - also well known as conductor of the London Mozart Players - and a cast of young singers. This American debut was covered extensively in the media, including on CBS's \"60 Minutes\". The present video is a live recording from Opera San José, where all seven performances sold out.
