Her deeply considered interpretations are truly astonishing!

Beatrice Rana gained worldwide attention in 2011 when, at the age of 18, she won the Montreal International Music Competition, and again in 2013 when she took second place (Silver Medal) and the Audience Prize at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. She made her first recording of Chopin in 2012, following her victory at the Montreal International Music Competition. The program featured the “24 Preludes,” and even then, her clear musical vision and overflowing poetic sensibility were highly praised. Now, nearly a decade later, Rana has returned to Chopin.
This time, she performs the 12 Études, Op. 25, and four Scherzos. The Études were recorded in January 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. The Scherzos were recorded a year later, in February 2021, after she had given careful thought to her interpretation.
Right from the opening of this album, as soon as you hear No. 1—known as “The Aeolian Harp”—with its powerful, nuanced arpeggios that seem to speak to the listener with every single note, you’ll be instantly captivated by this performance. As the album unfolds, the exquisite use of rubato—which seems to seep into the listener’s very breath—and the sheer pleasure of how she brings out the melodies hidden in the inner voices are simply irresistible. While her playing sounds extremely improvisational, one soon realizes it is, in fact, the result of meticulous calculation. Of course, this is underpinned by her astonishing technique and her incredibly refined sensibility. Her versatile expression in the etudes and her mature interpretation in the scherzos are remarkable. It’s also astonishing just how much information Rana has gleaned from the sheet music Chopin wrote.
Warner Music Japan

Tracklisting:

1.12 Etudes, Op. 25~No. 1 in A-Flat Major, "Aeolian Harp"
2.12 Etudes, Op. 25~No. 2 in F Minor
3.12 Etudes, Op. 25~No. 3 in F Major
4.12 Etudes, Op. 25~No. 4 in A Minor
5.12 Etudes, Op. 25~No. 5 in E Minor
6.12 Etudes, Op. 25~No. 6 in G-Sharp Minor
7.12 Etudes, Op. 25~No. 7 in C-Sharp Minor
8.12 Etudes, Op. 25~No. 8 in D-Flat Major
9.12 Etudes, Op. 25~No. 9 in G-Flat Major, "Butterfly"
10.12 Etudes, Op. 25~No. 10 in B Minor
11.12 Etudes, Op. 25~No. 11 in A Minor, "Winter Wind"
12.12 Etudes, Op. 25~No. 12 in C Minor
13.Scherzo No. 1 in B Minor, Op. 20
14.Scherzo No. 2 in B-Flat Minor, Op. 31
15.Scherzo No. 3 in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 39
16.Scherzo No. 4 in E Major, Op. 54
