This 2-CD album, "Alla Napolitana," captures the city's benevolent character in music from the 17th to the 20th centuries, incorporating the operatic styles of the so-called Neapolitan school of music that became famous in the late 1700s, as well as popular song and dance. They create their own unique music and give examples of their signature songs, such as the tarantella, a vibrant and sometimes frenetic dance that is emblematic of southern Italy. In all, this 24-track production is as diverse and colorful as Naples itself. Contrasting works include the cantata "La Veglia" (The Vigil), an elegant Christmas work by Venice-born, Naples-based Cristoforo Calesana, and a dramatic, bold work by Pietro Antonio Girolamo.The 18th-century popular song and tarantella piece "Lo Guarracino" is a delightful, ultra-quick piece about love, jealousy, and conflict among the fish of the Gulf of Naples, and even includes a passionate work by early 20th-century composer Rodolfo Falvao, in a program that spans the centuries, crossing the boundaries of classical, traditional, and song music.
