Georgian (formerly Georgian) pianist Maryam Batashvili won the 2014 Liszt International Piano Competition in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and has since been recognized as a "Liszt specialist. Her debut album on Warner Classics explores the relationship between the two masters by combining works by Liszt, who is her favorite pianist, and Chopin, whom Liszt called his best friend. From the very beginning of Liszt's "Poetic and Religious Music," No. 3, "God's Blessing in Solitude," we are captivated by its subdued tones. This piece is full of quietness, yet the mysterious vibrancy of the performance is unique. One can clearly feel Batashvili's love for the piece. The "Six Polish Songs," Liszt's brilliant piano arrangement of Chopin's simple songs, including the well-known "A Maiden's Wish," is a work that connects the two masters, and the personalities of both Chopin and Liszt are evident. In particular, Batashvili accurately depicts Liszt's excessive feelings in the very Liszt-like fifth song, "My Lovely. The "Consolation," which gives a glimpse of Liszt's contemplative face, and the second half, which juxtaposes Chopin's and Liszt's exercises, are also worth listening to.
