He won wide praise in 2008 in the title role of Rossini's Otello at the Rossini festival in Germany, and subsequently established an international reputation above all in Berlioz's La damnation de Faust, receiving acclaim for his performance of the work with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra in 2016. For Erato he has recorded John Nelson's Berlioz series - La damnation de Faust, Les Troyens and the Requiem - and on his 2020 Rossini album with Lawrence Brownlee his radiant top notes are matched by a remarkably robust lower register.\n\nHe in fact began his career as a baritone. \"I was a baritone for the first ten years, and then I switched to tenor. I sang four operas as a baritone, but around seventy-five as a tenor. Most singers get used to being assigned to a particular range and forget that they have a much wider one at their disposal. When I sing as a baritone rather than as a tenor, I produce the sound a little differently and handle the passaggio - the transition between registers - in another way. On this album I sing a great many high Cs and Ds, but the repertoire also draws on notes that reach down into the low register. 'BariTenor' is a private term of my own; it isn't an official one.
