After many years of focusing on the music of others, this trio—which does not include a drummer—decided that their new album, “Trio-logical,” was the perfect opportunity to tackle their own compositions.\nThe relationship between Allison, Cardenas, and Nash spans decades. Nash, a woodwind player, hired bassist Allison for his first professional gig in 1990. Their bond deepened further in the late 1990s when they became members of the Jazz Composers Collective. Guitarist Steve Cardenas joined Alison in 2004, and the two discovered a deep connection through the numerous projects they worked on together. This trio was formed after Cardenas and Allison received an invitation to perform a gig in upstate New York. For this performance, they decided to focus on the music of guitar legend Jim Hall. Jim Hall. After their first rehearsal, Cardenas and Allison decided to add a horn as a tribute to Jimmy Giuffre’s groundbreaking trio, which featured Hall and bassist Ralph Peña. Choosing Nash as the woodwind player was an excellent choice, and since then, this trio has continued to captivate audiences.\nIt could be said that this trio’s lineup is modeled after that Juffrey group. While they draw inspiration from that trio, they have no intention of imitating it. This is because their instrumentation affords them the freedom to explore every musical direction—from free jazz to folk—in the most conversational manner. Unsurprisingly, the group’s debut recording, *Quiet Revolution* (Newvelle and Sonic Camera Records, 2016\/2018), features arrangements by Hall and Juffrey. On their next recording, *Somewhere Else: West Side Story Songs* (Plastic Sax Records, 2019), they present Leonard Bernstein’s beloved classics through the trio’s unique interpretation. Musicals. *Healing Power*, released by Sunnyside in 2022, pays tribute to the talent of Carla Bley, while *Tell the Birds I Said Hello*, released in 2024, shines a light on the talent of Herbie Nichols.
