The other string quintet, Op.16, has two violins and two violas, and is lyrical and introspective in contrast. The Quintet for Piano and Strings, Op.30, is one of Taneyev's masterpieces, a 45-minute work. It overwhelms the listener with its scale and depth, more in the style of Wagner than Russian music. These three works have not been well recorded, so the new recording by the Martineau Quartet is extremely valuable.
