Vaughan Williams' \"Ballet Suite,\" commissioned by French flute virtuoso Louis Fleury (who premiered Debussy's \"Silanx\"), is a neoclassical work in the form of an 18th century French dance. Bax's \"Four Pieces\" rescues music from a ballet conceived for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and never realized.Lennox Berkley's \"Sonatina\" was originally written for recorder, but James Galway's performance of the piece established it in the flute repertoire. Howard Ferguson's \"Three Sketches,\" composed intermittently over a period of more than 20 years, features a Hindu melody in the third piece. Sonatas by York Bowen and William Olwyn round out this varied and engaging program.
