Born in 1916 in Mazameh, France, Sancan received his musical training in Morocco and Toulouse, France, before entering the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris in 1934, where he studied conducting with Charles Munch and Roger Desormiers, piano with Yves Natte, and composition with Henri Büttelmann. He won the Prix de Rome in 1943 for his cantata \"The Legend of Icarus\" and taught at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris from 1956 until his retirement in 1985. Among his pupils were Michel Bellof, Jean-Bernard Pommier, Jacques Louvier, Jean-Philippe Collard, and Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, among many other famous French pianists.
