Description:
With a long and illustrious career on Broadway, in Hollywood, at the Vatican, and at the White House, legendary jazz, soul, and gospel singer Esther Murrow performed with Duke Ellington's Sacred Concerts world tour, and during the civil rights movement, Martin Luther King's World Crusade rallies and a powerful voice made her famous in the 1960s, and between high-profile stage and film appearances, she recorded several albums, including 1972's Sister Woman. A long overlooked gem from the vaults of Fantasy Records, "Sister Woman" is now available on RSD and reissued on vinyl for the first time since 1972. The work incorporates social lyricism with jazz, gospel, and R&B influences, and is backed by an all-star cast of musicians, including drummer Bernard Purdie, guitarist Cornell Dupree, and bassist Chuck Rainey, with "The Ghetto" ( first recorded by the Staple Singers in 1968) and funky renditions of Laura Nyro's "When I Die," among others. The singer's sophomore effort also features the most soulful rendition of the popular '70s ballad "Trade Winds," mastered entirely on analog from the original tapes by Kevin Gray of Cohearant Audio and packaged in a chip-on jacket. Pressed on 180g heavy vinyl pressed at RTI for the best sound quality experience!
