The opera \"Love Potion\" is a comedy opera by Donizetti, and the \"love potion\" of the title refers to the \"love potion\" in Wagner's \"Tristan und Isolde\". It is an amusing slapstick comedy in which the main character, Nemorino, tries to make his lover fall in love with him by using this potion concocted by a dodgy medicine man. Pavarotti sang Nemorino as one of the winning roles, and has released several takes of the role, including a CD of the 1989 recording conducted by Levine and featuring Battle, Upshaw, and Nucci as co-stars, and a DVD of the 1991 recording with a similar cast. Decca has a CD of the Bonning recording from 1970 with Sutherland.This recording was made in 1981, when Pavarotti was in his mid-40s and at the height of his powers. The role of Adina, his girlfriend, is played by Judith Bregen, an American soprano who made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1970, and who has appeared in many DG recordings, including Mahler's \"Symphony No. 8\" recorded by Bernstein with the Vienna Philharmonic, Mendelssohn's \"A Midsummer Night's Dream\" by Levine, Fauré's \"Requiem\" by Tellák conducted by Robert Shaw, and Orff's \"Carmina Blana. Bernstein recorded Mahler's \"Eighth Symphony\" with the Vienna Philharmonic, Levine's Mendelssohn \"A Midsummer Night's Dream,\" Fauré's \"Requiem\" by Terák, and Orff's \"Carmina Burana\" conducted by Robert Shaw. The production was directed by Kirk Browning. He is a New York-born director of TV movies and operas, and also directed the TV movie version (1998) of André Previn's opera \"A Train Named Desire\" starring Renée Fleming (he has also directed many other opera movies). In this production of \"The Wonderful Medicine of Love,\" the stage is impressive with a good mix of tradition and entertainment.Extras include a photo gallery.
