Elgar's "Caractacus"!Martin Brabbins was the Permanent Conductor of the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra from 2003 to 2016, and has taken on the major role of Music Director of the English National Opera since 2016. Brabbins, who has earned acclaim for his recordings of Walton, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Tippett, and others, presents his latest work of English music, "Caractacus," a work for chorus and orchestra written just before "Enigma Variations. Caractacus" is the last choral work by Elgar in the 1890s, a period in which his fame grew with large-scale choral works such as "The Black Knight" (1893), "The Light of Life" (1896), "King Olaf" (1896), and "St. George's Banner" (1897). The Opera North Orchestra, active in both opera houses and concert halls, the Huddersfield Choral Society, also from West Yorkshire (who also collaborated with Martin Brabbins on Bryan's Symphony No. 1 [CDA67971]), and Elizabeth Llewellyn, Christopher Purves, and other fine singers, are beautifully brought together to represent Elgar's unwavering worth and glory.
